The good news. Lots of cool new apps will be available for your iPhone. Real chat, great games, super Exchange support, real typepad blogging... the bad news, it isn't available until July.
The updated software will be free for all iPhone users and $9.95 for the iPod Touch (down from the $20 they said it was going to cost previously).
MobileMe! It's like Exchange for the rest of us. You change a contact on your iPhone and it updates all your address books on your various computers- PC and Macs! Have your Calendar sync right over the air! No need to hook up your iPhone to your machine to sync them anymore.
Me.com replaces .Mac and has a host of web 2.0 applications that look amazingly like our native Mac apps. These tie into the MobileMe and you are all up to date all the time. Think about how nice it would be if you used a PC at work but could log into me.com and use your calendar and mail just like you would on your Mac? Beautiful.
3G iPhone! Black plastic back, solid metal buttons (side buttons) and thinner. Flush headphone jack- no more special headphones. GPS! Slightly better battery life.
8GB $199
16GB $299 also available in white
And it's available..... July 11th?? Damn you Apple.
Was typing this up while working and trying to get real time info- sorry for any inaccuracies. Will update it as things flesh out today

11:58 am - The apple online store is back up now. Although it doesn't look like there is a way to preorder the new iphone. Have to stop by the apple store on my lunch break...
1Oh! The excitement! Thats a long wait!
2Okay, so a couple of things that I was pretty sure I'd see on the new iPhone that I didn't see covered on engadget's liveblog.
The first is an improved camera with video. I know...someone already hacked the existing camera to allow video recording. But I thought this would be included.
The second is support for video chat. I heard the rumor that the video camera would be on the screen side of the phone and allow for live video chat. This would be really cool, but looks like it won't be included in this generation.
Overall, the apps look cool and the price is too good to pass up.
I wonder when the lines will start forming?
3Video would have been nice for sure. I've heard the hacked video is just a bunch of stills taken in quick succession to give the impression of video
I don't love video chat. Every time I try and do video chat either the firewall, voip or
some other network issue prevents it. So therefore I really stopped even trying. I love the software announcements today, but why oh why can't I have something today?? Throw me a friggen bone
Steve
4The new iPhone sounds cool. I am just hoping they don't come out with a new iPod for a while since I just bought the 160GB one.

5Thanks a bunch for sharing!
6Just heard about this on the news this evening
Pretty exciting, even though I won't
be getting one.
7Nice to see the drop in price though. If I didn't have a relatively new phone, I'd get this newer iPhone.
I'm getting a new iPhone for my bithday!

9I would love to have an Iphone, but I just can't justify it. I use my cellphone about two times a week.
Oh well...
10I was really excited for the announcement but I felt like it was lacking. Why do we have to wait so long to get it? Why didn't they talk about copy/paste? MMS?

Yeah, the wait time for everything announced today is BS!! I need something today
The 3 things that I have consistently listed as missing in the iPhone were NOT addressed today. The price cut however was terribly shocking and somewhat makes up for it- where my needs are
concerned anyways. The v2.0 software is going to rock
12The price cut is nice but there are raising the price of the data plan for the 3G to be $30.00 instead of $20. That means in the time of your contract you don't save any money.
I think I read somewhere that the 200 free text messages aren't included anymore but I haven't confirmed it so that might be wrong. Also you have to now activate the phone in the store (not through iTunes) because they are trying to stop people from unlocking.
I am very excited for 2.0 though!
13To echo what Katharine said about having to activate the phone instore. This also means that the lines to buy the iphone (at least on the first few days after it hits the streets) will be painfully slow because everyone will have to go through the process of activating the phone (not just pay for it and walk out of the store).
I know Apple needs to do this now because of the price cut. Because they are making their money back over the life of the contract and not just at the time you purchase the phone. But if you're planning to wait in line like me, could be a long wait I fear.
14Can't wait to get mine!

15must get the white one. must get the white one
16Makes me wish I had waited instead of buying mine in March...oh well I guess I could always sell it. But does anyone have any advice on what I should sell it for????
17I'm selling mine to my friend who isnt that technologically savvy for 100.00- I figure half price is good. Plus I just got mine replaced a week ago so its basically brand new.
